Meta ads billing: how Facebook ads charge you, failed payments and receipts
How do Facebook ads charge you? On a card or PayPal, Meta bills you after the ads run: each time your costs reach your payment threshold, and again on your monthly bill date. If you pay in advance, it deducts from your available funds up to once a day. When a payment fails, Meta pauses your ads and disables the ad account until the amount due is paid. Receipts are in Billing and payments, under Payment activity.

How do Facebook ads charge you? Two payment settings
Facebook and Instagram ads charge you in one of two ways, and the first payment method you add decides which. Everything below comes from Meta's Business Help Centre as it read on 13 October 2026. The pages carry no publication date, so treat the details as current on that day.
Meta's page on automatic billing and available funds says PayPal, or a credit or debit card whose bank supports recurring payments, sets the account up for automatic billing. Other first payment methods, including local manual ones, set it up for available funds, which is money you add in advance. You may be locked into the setting you started with. Meta says the option to use both on one account is being introduced gradually.
| Question | Automatic billing | Available funds (prepaid) |
|---|---|---|
| When money leaves | When your ad costs reach your payment threshold, and on your monthly bill date for anything left. | Before the ads run. Meta then deducts from the balance up to once a day. |
| Payment threshold | Yes. It starts small and may rise as payments go through. | None, but Meta may limit how much you can add. |
| If the money is not there | The charge fails, ads pause and the account is disabled until you pay. | Delivery is disrupted when the funds run short. Auto-reload can top the balance up. |
The rows draw on that page and on Meta's pages about payment thresholds and available funds. Where an account has more than one source, Meta says it uses ad credits first, then available funds, then the payment method on automatic billing. Our post on how much Facebook ads cost covers budgets, the threshold and spending limits.
Does Facebook ads charge per day or per click?
Not per day on a card, and per click only if you chose it. With automatic billing the trigger is an amount, not a date. Meta's page about automatic payment says you may even see several transactions in one day.
Daily charging belongs to the other methods. With available funds Meta deducts up to once a day. Its page for accounts without a payment threshold (direct debit or a manual method) says the same, and that for smaller campaigns it waits until charges reach USD 25 or seven days have passed.
What you are charged for is a separate choice. Meta's page on how it charges for ads says you are usually charged for impressions unless you specified otherwise when creating the ad. Its page on ads that receive no impressions or clicks says that if you choose link clicks you pay per link click, and nothing if there are none. The same holds for impressions. The choice sits under "When you get charged" in the ad set, and the options depend on your objective.
Why you are charged several times a month, or after ads stop
Because of the two triggers. Meta's page on when it charges you says you can reach the threshold more than once in a month and still be billed on the bill date for the remainder, including after your ads have stopped. Its page on seeing multiple charges adds three more cases:
- Two charges of the same amount. Meta says these are likely for activity on different days, with one delayed by your bank.
- Invoices with overlapping dates. Clicks and impressions can be recorded up to 48 hours late. Those go on the next invoice, and Meta says you are not charged twice for them.
- A small charge you did not expect. Meta's page on charges and payment history says it may place a temporary authorisation to validate a card, which typically drops off within three to five working days.
You have two controls. You can set a maximum payment threshold in Payment settings, and a lower value takes effect immediately. You can also use Pay now to pay early. Reaching the threshold does not stop your ads: Meta's page comparing budgets, limits and thresholds says only budgets, spending limits and available funds do that.
Why a Facebook ads payment failed, and how to fix it
A Facebook ads payment fails when Meta cannot charge the payment method on the account. Meta's page on fixing a failed payment says your ads are then paused and the ad account disabled until the amount due is paid, and that Billing and payments may describe the account as unsettled. The reasons it lists:
- The payment method is not supported in your country, or is on too many ad accounts. Meta says one method can typically be added to up to ten.
- The card or recurring payment method is not active.
- The expiry date is invalid.
- The card could not be verified, for example a wrong security code or a one-time password that never arrived.
- The card details are wrong, or your bank declined the charge under its own rules.
- The connection between Meta's processor and your bank dropped or timed out.
- There were insufficient funds, or the card has a limit.

Open Billing and payments
Select the ad account, then click Payment methods. - 02
Click Pay now
Choose an existing payment method or add a new one. If it keeps failing, Meta suggests trying again later with a different card. On a prepaid account, use Add funds. - 03
Wait for delivery to resume
Meta says it resumes active and scheduled ads once the balance is paid. If they stay paused, you may have reached the daily spending limit Meta sets. See why a campaign is not spending.
To prevent a repeat, Meta's page on preventing payment failures suggests adding a backup payment method, checking expiry dates, keeping funds on the card near your bill date, and lowering your threshold to match any per-transaction limit on the card.
Meta Ads Manager payment settings: add or change a payment method
Meta Ads Manager payment settings live in Billing and payments. You need full control of the ad account in a business portfolio, or admin permissions on the ad account. Meta's steps to add a payment method are: open Billing and payments, click Payment settings (or pick the account, then Payment methods), then Add payment method. With several saved, you can set a default.
To edit a payment method, click Options beside it and choose Edit. To remove one, there must be no outstanding balance. Meta says to pause active ads, allow up to 48 hours for late ad events, and clear the balance with Pay now first.
Facebook ad receipts and Meta Ads Manager billing history
Facebook ad receipts are in Billing and payments, under Payment activity, on desktop only. That is the Facebook Ads Manager billing section. Meta's page on viewing and downloading receipts says to pick a date range and click Download beside a transaction. The Download menu also gives all transactions as one PDF, or a billing report as PDF or CSV.
A receipt shows the amount, the billing reason (such as threshold or bill date), the campaigns that incurred the cost and the results. The clicks and impressions on it are the ones you were charged for, which Meta says may differ from the totals in Ads Manager. Receipts cannot be addressed to a different customer, and edits to your name or address apply to future receipts only.
To match a bank statement, Meta's page on finding charges on your statement says each transaction has a 10-character reference number. On a statement it follows "FACEBK*" or "FACEBOOK INC.", and you can search for it in Payment activity.
Facebook ad credit codes: how ad credits work
A Facebook ad credit code is a 16-character code you claim in Payment settings. Meta's page about ad credits calls a credit a form of payment for eligible advertising costs. It comes from an ad refund, a promotion inside the product or by email from facebookmail.com, or one of Meta's partners. To claim one, add a payment method first, then choose Add payment method, Ad credit, enter the code and click Claim.
- A credit does not cover costs from before it was added, or after it is used up or expires. Those go to your default payment method.
- An expired credit cannot be reactivated, even if part of it is unspent. The balance and expiry date are under Payment settings.
- To spend no more than the credit, Meta suggests an account spending limit equal to its balance.
If a code is refused, Meta's troubleshooting page lists the reasons: it is invalid or expired, it has already been used (including on an account that shares your card), its promotional uses have run out, your account has used a credit before, or it is for new advertisers only.
Disputing a charge and contacting billing support
Start with the receipt. Meta's page on unrecognised activity says to click the charge's Transaction ID in Payment activity to see the billing reason and the ads involved, then check with anyone who shares the ad account or the card.
If the charge still looks wrong, Meta directs billing questions to Business Support Home, with Contact support at the bottom of the page. Its page on multiple charges also links to a form for reporting a billing problem. Meta says it reviews an account's payment history, including charge disputes, when it sets the payment threshold. That suggests raising a problem with Meta before your bank, though the pages do not say so directly.

Questions people ask
How do Facebook ads charge you?
With PayPal or most credit and debit cards, Meta uses automatic billing: it charges you each time your ad costs reach your payment threshold, and again on your monthly bill date for anything left. If your account runs on available funds, you add money in advance and Meta deducts from it up to once a day as your ads run.
Does Facebook ads charge per day or per click?
On automatic billing Meta does not charge on a daily schedule; it charges when you reach your payment threshold and on your monthly bill date. Accounts on available funds or direct debit are charged up to once a day. Meta says you are usually charged for impressions, and for link clicks only if you chose that under When you get charged in the ad set.
Why did my Facebook ads payment fail?
Meta lists an unsupported payment method, an inactive card, an invalid expiry date, a card that could not be verified, wrong card details, a decline by your bank, a connection error and insufficient funds. Your ads pause and the ad account is disabled until you pay the amount due with Pay now in Billing and payments.
Where do I find Facebook ad receipts?
Open Billing and payments on a desktop computer, click Payment activity, choose a date range and click Download beside the transaction. Meta says a receipt shows the amount, the billing reason, the campaigns that incurred the cost and your ad results. You can also download every transaction as one PDF.
