Meta Ad Library filters, sorting and labels explained

A keyword search in the Meta Ad Library has six filters (language, advertiser, platform, media type, active status and impressions by date) and two sort orders: impressions from high to low, which is the default, and most recent. The impressions sort gives you an order without any figures, and impressions are not results, so commercial ads still cannot be sorted by performance. The "Low impression count" label means the ad has had fewer than 100 impressions.

Every filter in the Meta Ad Library, and what it does

We opened the Meta Ad Library without logging in on 13 October 2026, chose a country and All ads, and ran keyword searches. Above the results sit two buttons, Filters and Sort by. The Filters panel listed six settings.

The filters in the Meta Ad Library for a keyword search of all ads
FilterChoicesWhat it does
LanguageA searchable list of languagesKeeps ads in the languages you pick.
AdvertiserA searchable list of advertisersNarrows a keyword search to particular advertisers.
PlatformFacebook, Instagram, Audience Network, Messenger, WhatsApp, ThreadsKeeps ads shown on the platforms you tick. You can tick more than one.
Media typeAll media types; Images; Memes; Images and memes; Videos; No image or videoThe panel describes Images as images with little to no text and Memes as images with text. On a keyword search it shows your keyword beside Memes, and labels Videos as keyword within video transcript or ad copy.
Active statusActive and inactive; Active ads; Inactive adsChooses running ads, stopped ads or both. Stopped commercial ads are mostly not kept; see the note below.
Impressions by dateAn exact date, or a from and to dateKeeps ads that were shown in that period. It does not show how many impressions an ad had.

Three details are easy to miss. When you open one advertiser's ads, the Advertiser filter is replaced by a Keyword filter that searches within that Page. Meta's Help Centre article still lists four platforms, while the live panel also offers WhatsApp and Threads. And the Filters button carries a count of the filters applied; a search opened with one already set, active status.

Meta Ad Library sort by impressions: what it does

Yes, results can be sorted, in two ways. The Sort by panel for all ads offered Impressions: high to low and Most recent. Every search we ran opened on impressions, high to low. Most recent groups results under month headings by launch date.

The limit matters more than the feature. The sort puts ads in order, but the listings show no impression figure for an ordinary commercial ad, so you cannot tell whether the first result was seen ten times more than the second or only slightly more. The two Meta help pages we read do not describe this sort at all, so we found no published definition of what is counted or over what period.

Impressions are also not performance. An impression is an ad being shown. Ads with high counts are the ones that received budget, and nothing in the library says what that budget returned. Clicks, conversions and spend for commercial ads are not published, as set out in does the Meta Ad Library show ad spend? So there is still no way to sort a competitor's ads by results.

Meta Ad Library low impression count: what the label means

It means the ad has barely been shown. Hovering over the Low impression count label in the live library brought up Meta's own one-line explanation: "This ad has had fewer than 100 impressions."

We saw the label on newly launched ads after switching the sort to Most recent. Those listings carried it twice, in the header and over the creative, along with a line reading Impressions: <100 and a total active time in hours next to the start date. With the default sort, none of the first results had it.

That tooltip is the only explanation we could find. The label is not mentioned in the library's FAQ, in the Help Centre article or in the Business Help Centre page about the library. Meta does not say there whether the count is for the ad's whole life or what happens to the label once an ad passes 100, so treat anything more specific as a guess. In practice it marks an ad that is new, paused early or given almost no budget, which makes it weak evidence of what an advertiser believes in.

The other labels on a listing

  • Active or Inactive, Library ID, Started running on, Platforms. The standard header. The Library ID identifies one ad and is part of its direct link.
  • EU transparency. Its tooltip says Meta provides additional information for ads shown anywhere in the EU. On these ads, See ad details opens extra sections: Transparency by location, with tabs for the European Union and the United Kingdom, and Advertiser and payer. The EU tab lists the location, age and gender the advertiser selected, then an estimated reach with a breakdown by location, age and gender. An ad without the label showed only About the advertiser and About ads and data use.
  • This ad has multiple versions. The tooltip explains that the ad uses one of Meta's dynamic formats: the advertiser supplies a set of images, text and platform preferences, and Meta's system assembles the combination for each audience. The details view has a counter to step through the versions.
  • N ads use this creative and text. Several separate ads share one creative and one piece of copy, and the library has stacked them. See summary details opens a Summary data panel listing each ad with its own Library ID and start date. The panel notes that your search filters apply to the group too.

All ads and the special categories

The ad category drop-down changes what you search and what you can filter. With Australia selected it offered All ads and Issues, elections or politics. With the United States selected it also offered Properties, Employment, and Financial products and services.

Choosing Issues, elections or politics for the United States changed three things. The listings showed ranges for estimated audience size, amount spent and impressions. The Filters panel gained Delivery by region, Disclaimer and Estimated audience size. And Sort by gained a third option, Impressions: low to high. Meta's Help Centre says these ads are searchable for seven years, active or not.

For competitor research, stay on All ads. The special categories cover narrower sets of ads, and a normal product ad will not be in the political one.

Branded content and the Ad Library Report

Two links in the library's header lead to separate tools. The branded content search finds Facebook and Instagram posts, stories, videos and reels that carry a paid partnership label. You pick a platform and a date range, then search for a business or creator. The Business Help Centre says it covers branded content created on or after 17 August 2023.

The Ad Library Report covers only ads about social issues, elections or politics. Its spending table can be sorted by Page name, disclaimer, amount spent and number of ads. That is a real sort by spend, but not for commercial ads.

Meta Ad Library search not working: what to check

Most empty searches come from the settings rather than a fault. In order, here is how to check the Meta Ad Library before assuming it is broken.

  • Country and category. The library's search tips say to set both before searching. A brand that advertises only in another country will show nothing in yours.
  • Leftover filters. The count on the Filters button shows how many are applied. Open the panel and reset any you did not mean to keep.
  • Quotation marks. Per the search tips, quotes ask for an exact phrase in that order. Without them the words can appear in any order.
  • Timing. The front page says an ad appears within 24 hours of its first impression, so an ad launched this morning may not be listed yet.
  • Login. The FAQ says anyone can search without an account, but viewing adult content and reporting ads need one.
  • An outage. The library's System status link goes to Meta's Ads Transparency status page, which reports on the Ad Library, the report, the API and branded content separately.

Questions people ask

Can you sort the Meta Ad Library by impressions?

Yes. When we checked on 13 October 2026, Sort by offered Impressions: high to low, which was the default, and Most recent. The sort gives an order but shows no impression figures for ordinary commercial ads, and impressions are not results, so you still cannot sort ads by performance.

What does low impression count mean in the Meta Ad Library?

Meta's tooltip on the label says the ad has had fewer than 100 impressions. We saw it on newly launched ads when sorting by Most recent. Meta's FAQ and help pages do not explain the label further, so the tooltip is the only official wording we found.

What filters does the Meta Ad Library have?

A keyword search of all ads has six: language, advertiser, platform, media type, active status and impressions by date. Opening one advertiser's ads swaps the advertiser filter for a keyword filter, and the issues, elections or politics category adds delivery by region, disclaimer and estimated audience size.

Why is Meta Ad Library search not working?

Check that a country and ad category are set, reset any leftover filters, and remove quotation marks unless you want an exact phrase. An ad can take up to 24 hours to appear after its first impression. If results still fail to load, Meta's Ads Transparency status page reports outages for the Ad Library.
