Advantage+ placements vs manual placements on Meta
Advantage+ placements is the default setting in which Meta decides where each ad appears across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, Threads and the Audience Network. Manual placements means you untick the places you do not want. On a sales, leads or app promotion campaign, excluding a placement in any ad set turns the campaign's Advantage+ label off, and Meta may still spend around 5% of the budget on each excluded placement unless you switch that option off.

What a placement is
Everything below comes from Meta's own pages as they read on 13 October 2026. The help pages carry no publication date, so treat the details as current on that day.
Meta's page about ad placements defines a placement as a place where your ad can run. Which ones are open to you depends on the campaign objective, the ad type and your settings, and Meta says not every placement is available for every ad. The same page says adding placements does not raise the cost of an ad, and that some placements are not yet available in every country.
Meta groups placements by how people experience the ad, not by app. A Stories ad looks much the same on Facebook, Messenger and Instagram, so those sit in one group.
| Placement group | Placements Meta lists |
|---|---|
| Feeds | Facebook Feed, Threads feed, Instagram Feed, Instagram profile feed, Facebook Marketplace, Facebook right column, Facebook notifications, Facebook Business Explore, Instagram Explore home. |
| Stories, status and reels | Facebook Stories, Instagram Stories, Messenger Stories, Instagram Reels, Facebook Reels, WhatsApp status. |
| In-stream ads for reels | Facebook in-stream reels, ads on Facebook Reels. |
| Search | Facebook search results, Instagram search results. |
| Apps and sites | Audience Network native, banner and interstitial; Audience Network rewarded videos. |
Three details from that page are easy to miss. A note on it says that from March 2026 the Facebook Feed placement includes the Facebook Friends tab. Messenger appears in the list only as Messenger Stories. And Meta's table of placements by objective adds a Facebook profile feed placement, which it says becomes available once an advertiser has consistently run ads that comply with its policies. For the image shape each placement expects, see our guide to Meta ad sizes.
What Advantage+ placements does on Meta
Advantage+ placements leaves every available placement switched on and lets Meta's delivery system decide, impression by impression, where the budget goes. Meta's page about Advantage+ placements says it looks across all placements for the most cost-effective opportunities, and it is the setting Meta recommends.
The reason Meta gives is in its explanation of the delivery system. The system aims for the most results at the lowest average cost overall, not the lowest cost in each placement. Meta's worked example has a budget of USD 27 and three placements. With all three on, the ad set gets nine results at USD 3 each, even though Instagram's results cost USD 5. Turn Instagram off because it looks expensive, and the budget buys eight results at USD 3.25 each, because the money moves to dearer opportunities elsewhere.
Advantage+ placements vs manual placements: what changes
The difference is whether any placement is excluded. Meta's page on alternatives to excluding placements says that if no ad set excludes a placement, and you have not opted out of mobile or desktop devices, you have the same setup as Advantage+ placements and Ads Manager shows Advantage+ on beside Placements.
Meta's instructions for choosing placements differ by objective:
- Awareness, traffic or engagement. In the ad set's Placements section, hover over Advantage+ placements, click Edit and select Manual placements. Then untick devices, platforms or individual placements.
- Leads, app promotion or sales. Click Show more settings under Placements, then edit Devices and operating systems, Platforms or Placement controls. Meta notes that excluding a placement in any ad set, or opting out of mobile or desktop, triggers Advantage+ off.
That last point matches Meta's developer documentation, which says every ad set in a campaign must be free of placement targeting and exclusions for the campaign to count as Advantage+. Off is not an error. It tells you the campaign is running with a manual setting, as our post on Advantage+ campaigns in 2026 explains.
If a box for a placement is not shown, the same help page says, that placement is not available for your ad type or objective.
Excluded does not always mean zero: limited spend
When we wrote about Advantage+ campaigns on 9 October 2026 we could only cite Meta's developer announcement for this option. Meta's help pages document it for Ads Manager too.
Meta's page about limited spend on placements says that when you exclude a placement, it will aim to spend around 5% of your budget on each excluded placement if that is likely to improve performance. The option exists for the sales, leads, traffic, engagement and app promotion objectives. Eligible advertisers are opted in by default when they exclude a platform or placement. Meta's how-to page adds that advertisers in some sectors, such as pharmaceuticals, start with it off.
Meta says ad sets that allowed limited spend had a 7.7% lower cost per result on average in a global analysis. That is Meta's figure, and the page gives no period or sample.
If an exclusion is a real constraint, look for the Allow limited spend to excluded placements tick box in the Placements section. Untick it, or click Manage excluded placements to decide placement by placement. Meta says placements with limited spend appear in the placement breakdown once the campaign is live.
Is Advantage+ placements good?
On Meta's evidence it is usually the cheaper setting, and there are legitimate reasons to leave it. Meta says that in an experiment, ad sets using Advantage+ placements had an 11.7% lower cost per action on average than ad sets with manual placements. The help page does not describe the experiment, so read it as Meta's claim about an average, not a forecast for your account.
Meta's alternatives page answers the common reasons for excluding placements:
- My creative does not fit. Meta says an ad is left out of a placement automatically when the placement does not support its format, and suggests cropping the media for each placement.
- Some placements cost more. Meta points to the worked example above and suggests widening the audience.
- The content there does not suit my brand. Meta points to inventory filters, block lists and account controls, covered in the next section.
The setting optimises for the result you chose for the ad set. If that result is a poor stand-in for what you want, such as link clicks when you need buyers, automatic placements will find the cheapest clicks wherever they are. That is our inference, not a statement from Meta, and the fix is the optimisation event more than the placement list.
Account-level placement controls and inventory filters
For a constraint that applies to everything you run, Meta offers controls above the ad set. Its page on account controls says placement controls set in Advertising settings apply to all campaigns in the ad account, including ones using Advantage+ placements, and that changes to existing campaigns can take up to 48 hours. The developer documentation says placement exclusions set at account level do not switch a campaign's Advantage+ state off.
The list is short. The options Meta's page names are the two Audience Network placements, Facebook Marketplace and Facebook right column. Meta says the feature is being introduced gradually, and that account controls do not apply to ads about social issues, elections or politics, or to ads about financial products and services, employment or housing. Its best practices page warns that these controls may limit how well Advantage+ placements works.
Inventory filters are a different tool. They do not remove a placement. Meta's page about inventory filter says they control how sensitive the content next to your ad can be, with three levels:
| Level | What Meta says it does |
|---|---|
| Expanded | The default. Ads can appear next to all content that meets Meta's content monetisation policies, for the most reach. |
| Moderate | Excludes highly sensitive content. Lowers reach and may increase costs. |
| Limited | Excludes additional sensitive content and live videos. Lowers reach and can increase costs. |
Meta's instructions put the setting in the Brand Safety and Suitability Centre, under Controls and then Ad account settings. There are separate filters for feed ads (Facebook and Instagram Feed, Reels feed and Threads feed) and for the Audience Network. Meta says the filters are rolling out gradually, that a filter does not block individual publishers, and that it cannot guarantee all content will match a brand's own standards.
How to see results by placement
Meta's page on viewing results by platform, device and placement gives these steps.
- 01
Open the table you want
In Ads Manager, click Campaigns, Ad sets or Ads. - 02
Open Breakdown
The Breakdown menu sits between Columns and Reports. - 03
Choose a delivery breakdown
Pick Platform, Platform and device, Placement, or Placement and device. The table updates to show a row for each.
Meta labels the values in all four breakdowns as estimated. Its reporting page adds that conversions it cannot attribute to a row are shown as Uncategorised, and that statistical modelling may be used in breakdowns.
Read the breakdown with Meta's USD 27 example in mind: a dearer row is a prompt to ask why, not an instruction to exclude it. If an ad set is not delivering at all, see our post on campaigns that are not spending.

Questions people ask
What is Advantage+ placements on Meta?
Advantage+ placements is the default placement setting in Meta Ads Manager. It leaves every available placement across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, Threads and the Audience Network switched on and lets Meta's delivery system decide where each ad appears. Meta recommends it because the system aims for the lowest average cost per result overall, not the lowest cost in each placement.
What is the difference between Advantage+ placements and manual placements?
With Advantage+ placements no placement is excluded, and with manual placements you untick the platforms or placements you do not want. On sales, leads and app promotion campaigns, Meta says excluding a placement in any ad set, or opting out of mobile or desktop devices, triggers Advantage+ off for the campaign. Placement exclusions set for the whole ad account do not switch it off.
Is Advantage+ placements good?
Meta says that in an experiment, ad sets using Advantage+ placements had an 11.7% lower cost per action on average than ad sets using manual placements. That is Meta's own figure and its help page does not describe the experiment. Manual exclusions still make sense for a real business constraint, and Meta offers account-level placement controls and inventory filters for brand suitability.
Can Meta still spend on a placement I excluded?
Yes, unless you switch the option off. Meta's help pages say that when you exclude a placement it aims to spend around 5% of your budget on each excluded placement if that is likely to improve performance, and that eligible advertisers are opted in by default. Untick Allow limited spend to excluded placements in the ad set's Placements section to exclude a placement entirely.
